Meghalaya — 'Abode of Clouds' — is arguably India's most unexpectedly beautiful state. Perched on a plateau above Bangladesh in northeastern India, this small state receives the highest rainfall on earth (Mawsynram and Cherrapunji hold world rainfall records), creating a landscape of perpetual mist, cascading waterfalls, dense living rainforests, labyrinthine cave systems, and a network of living root bridges grown by the Khasi and Jaintia peoples over centuries. Shillong, the state capital and India's 'Rock Capital', is a charming Scottish-style hill station with a vibrant café culture and music scene. Dawki offers one of the most surreal river experiences in India — Umngot River is so transparent that boats appear to float on air.
October to February is the best time with clear skies and pleasant temperatures. March to May is also good. Monsoon (June–September) brings spectacular waterfalls and lush greenery but many roads can get washed out. The living root bridges are most beautiful post-monsoon (September–October).

Departure
Meghalaya rewards every type of traveller. For adventure seekers, the cave systems are extraordinary — Mawsmai Cave in Cherrapunji is a cathedral of limestone formations, while the Krem Liat Prah is the longest cave in India and the longest in the Indian subcontinent at over 31 km. The living root bridges of Nongriat — engineered over centuries by Khasi villagers from the aerial roots of rubber fig trees — are one of the most unique natural-human hybrid structures in the world, and the trek down to the double-decker root bridge is a highlight of any Meghalaya trip. The Dawki (Umngot) River, with its impossibly clear emerald-green water, offers the experience of floating in a boat that appears to hover above the river bed — a sight that seems unreal until you experience it.

October to February is best for clear skies, pleasant temperatures, and accessible roads. September–October gives the lushest post-monsoon landscape. Avoid peak monsoon (June–August) for road travel, though waterfalls are at their most spectacular.
The trek involves descending and climbing approximately 3,000 steps — it is moderately difficult and takes about 1.5–2 hours each way. Basic fitness is sufficient. Luxytrix provides a local Khasi guide who knows every step of the trail.
Yes, Shillong is 100 km from Guwahati Airport (2.5–3 hours by car). Most Luxytrix Meghalaya packages start and end at Guwahati, which has good flight connections from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bangalore.
Meghalaya packages start at ₹12,999 per person for 3N/4D covering Shillong and Cherrapunji, and go up to ₹22,999 for the complete 5N/6D circuit including the Living Root Bridge trek, Mawsynram, and all major caves.
